A raw and authentic walk through mountains and forests, following the Camino’s most ancient and least traveled route
The walk
The Camino Primitivo is the Camino in its most essential form. Beginning in Oviedo and leading toward Lugo, this route follows the oldest known path to Santiago, first walked by King Alfonso II in the 9th century. It remains today the most raw, rugged, and least traveled of all Camino routes. This is a journey through mountains, forests, and remote rural landscapes, where small hamlets, ancient stone churches, and high ridgelines replace bustling towns and cafés. The terrain is more demanding, the paths quieter, and the atmosphere deeply contemplative. Walking the Primitivo is about embracing simplicity and presence. Days unfold in silence broken only by wind, cowbells, and footsteps. Effort is rewarded with sweeping views, moments of solitude, and a profound sense of connection—to the land, to history, and to oneself. Less polished and more intimate than other routes, the Camino Primitivo invites those who seek not just a destination, but a transformative experience, shaped by nature, effort, and the timeless rhythm of walking.
A typical day
We start walking at around 8:30 am, after breakfast, covering an average of 24 km daily, with a maximum of 38 km, but without giving in to hurry or losing our balance. Weather permitting, lunch will normally be a gourmet picnic, in some quiet natural space along the way. We end our daily walk between 4 and 6 pm. Every evening a culinary adventure awaits us to discover the cuisine and local products of the best restaurants that we will find along the way. Halfway through our journey we will have a shorter stage that will allow us to recover in a luxurious hotel-bodega, with spa, winery visit and wine tasting.
The lodging
We always stay in beautiful accommodation - boutique hotels, rural guesthouses, luxury inns in renovated ancient monasteries. Each establishment has been carefully selected to offer you the best. Our standard, aimed at strengthening the group spirit, is to offer shared rooms with twin beds.
